Photo Sarah K. HALE was born on January 6, 1822 in Keene, New Hampshire. She died in 1879. Sarah's first husband, Stephen Rowe Bellows, died 7 months after they were married. She remained a widow for 4 years and returned to Keene, NH to live. There she met Harry Hibbard and they married in 1848.

Harry was a proficient attorney, and Sarah moved with him to his home in Bath, New Hampshire. Another untimely tragedy occurred, when their only child Alice died at a very early age. When Harry Hibbard became active in politics, she supported his efforts, and they spent several happy years together.

As a young attorney in 1844, before his marriage to Sarah, Harry Hibbard had been involved as a prosecuting attorney in the murder trial of William F. Comings, for killing his wife. The jury found Comings guilty of murder in the first degree, and he was sentenced to hang. In June 1853, after being in prison for nine years, William Comings was finally pardoned by the executive authority of the State of New Hampshire. Mr. Comings went on to marry a second time, and to move "out west."

While still a fairly young man, Harry developed a "painful and protracted illness," and eventually was admitted to the McLean Asylum For the Insane at Somerville MA. Harry died there in 1872 at the age of 56 years, of "brain disease."

Sarah grieved for her husband, but continued to live in their home in Bath NH where she collected a variety of historical documents. These papers, which she donated to the New Hampshire historical society, included the signatures or handwriting of many famous politicians and writers.

Seven years after her husband's death, in 1879, she died suddenly, and was buried next to Harry, under a red granite cross. During her funeral, it is recorded that Rev. William O. White, a twenty-five year pastor of the Unitarian Church in Keene repeated these lines at her grave:

"Here, in an inn a stranger dwelt,
Here joy and grief, by turns, she felt,
Poor dwelling! Now we close the door,
The sojourner returns no more.
Now of a lasting home possessed,
She goes to seek a deeper rest,
Then open to her, gates of peace!
And bid the pilgrim's journey cease."

The preachers words would be prophetic, in that Sarah's home would later become an inn (or at least a B&B) for a time. But is it Sarah who produces the smell of cigar smoke that is sometimes reported in her former house? It is said the house is haunted. Parents: David HALE and Hannah EMERSON.

Harriet Josephine HALL was born on August 14, 1846 in Rochester, Monroe County, NY. She lived at the home of Lewis and Eliza Rogers in N. Collins, NY between 1855 and 1865. Census: 1860 N. Collins, NY
Census: 1870 N. Collins, NY
Census: 1892 N. Collins, NY
Census: 1850 Buffalo, Erie Co, NY, 1st ward.
Census: 1880 N. Collins, NY
Census: 1875 N. Collins, NY
Census: 1865 N. Collins, NY
Census: 1855 N. Collins, NY
In 1870 she was a homemaker in North Collins, Erie County, NY. She died on January 11, 1899 in North Collins, Erie County, NY. Death Records on file with North Collins Town Clerk show Harriet Josephine Hall died June 11, 1899, her parents were Issac Hall, NY and Mary Jane Hall (Maiden name?), NY.

However, per Florence Michael's letter to her daughter, they were staying thru the winter with their grandmother Harriet when she died. Family Bible, in Mary Hibbard's possession shows Harriet died January 11, 1899. She was buried in North Collins Cemetery, North Collins, NY. H. Josephine's cemetery stone is in the N. Collins cemetery between her husband and her daughter, Irene Guerin. Stone just reads "Mother".

Burial location: Section B, Lot 42, grave #2 aka North Center section, row 12. She lived. Harriet appeared in the 1850 census record in Buffalo, 1st Ward, living with her parents. She was listed as age six but info was given to census enumerator by someone in a family named Sloan that lived in same dwelling so the information obtained is suspect.. A family bible in the possession of Mary (Hibbard) Stack notes Harriet was born in 1846 and later census records agree.

1855 N. Collins census record shows Harriet, age 8, living with the family of Lewis & Eliza Rogers: Lewis Rogers , 30-m, born Erie, farmer; EIiza, wife, 28-f,; Harriet Hall, niece, 8-f, born Mont. ?? Why did they give Harriet's birthplace as Mont. ?? Was she actually their niece??

1860 N. Collins census indicates H. Josephine Hall, age 13, was living with the family of Lewis & Eliza Rogers: Lewis Rogers, 34-m, farmer, born NY Value 2000-625.; Eliza Rogers, 31-f, born in NY; Charles S. Rogers, 2-m, born in NY; H. Josephine Hall, 13, f, b. NY.

1865 N. Collins census indicates H. Josephine Hall, age 18, was living with the family of Lewis & Eliza Rogers: Lewis Rogers, 40-m, farmer, born Erie.; Eliza Rogers, 31-f, wife, parent of 1, married once, born Erie.

Letter written by Florence Michael (Enos Hibbard's granddaughter) to her daughter (while discussing H. Josephine Hall Hibbard) states, in part: "Her maiden name was Harriet Warren. Very little is known about her Mother but some of her ancestors were Penna Dutch, their names were Brinkerhoff and lived around Marcellus, NY. Her mother died when she was very small and is buried in the N.C. cemetery. She was taken in by a family of the name of Rogers, to work for her keep. When her grandfather Hall, who lived in the city of Rochester, later found out about it, he sent for her".---- "Grandfather, Joseph Hall of Rochester, gave Harriet $80, 000. as a wedding present. They (Enos & H. Josephine) bought a large farm one mile south of the village of N.C. The house still stands on the left side of the road, right where the railroad and the highway crosses on the way to Gowanda. (NOTE by Mary H. Stack: N.C. = North Collins, Erie Co., NY. A bit of the foundation where this house originally stood was located in 1996 by Mary (Hibbard) Stack and 3 other Hibbard descendants.) In time, natural gas was discovered on the farm, 16 wells in all. The Erie Gas co took it over and it was piped into the village. In 1874 he (Enos) had a large red brick house built on Main St. in the village. It's right next to the Bank of N.C. It had a big stable, which was almost like a second house as the carriage room and office were all finished and plastered. They always kept a coachman and that stable now is the Public Library. When he (Joseph Hall) died, he left a large estate, willing it to his granddaughter, Harriet, it also took in his greatgrand Children (which included my *Mother) even those that were unborn". (*NOTE by Mary H. Stack: Florence Michael's Mother was Irene Hibbard.)

How can Harriet's maiden name be Harriet Warren?? She was daughter of Isaac Hall, per grandfather Joseph Hall's Last Will & Testament. Could Florence have meant H. Josephine's mother was named Harriet Warren? If so, why does H. Josephine's death record indicate her mother was named Mary Jane?? Perhaps Isaac Hall and Mary Jane (Warren?) were not married??

Per N. Collins Town Clerk, Harriet's death record showed she was born to Isaac Hall & Mary Jane Hall (maiden name?) Parents: Issac HALL and Mary Jane.

Spouse: Enos Southwick HIBBARD. Enos Southwick HIBBARD and Harriet Josephine HALL were married on December 11, 1867 in North Collins, Erie County, NY. Book: History of Town of Concord, pg. 754 states Enos S. Hibbard "was married in 1867 to H. Josephine Hall, of Rochester, who was born Aug. 14, 1846."

NOTE: Could "of Rochester" indicate Harriet was born in Rochester? Her death certificate states she was born in Rochester, NY. Listed as living in Enos Hibbard's household (other than family):
1875 N. Collins census: 1 domestic and 1 nurse: Kate Shugar 35-f, domestic, born Erie, single; Emroy Anice 31-f, nurse, born Erie, occupation-artist, single.

1900 census: Laitella Griffeth (?) f, servant, housekeeper.

C. Brown, and they live in Buffalo. Hamilton married Gwendolyn Burk, daughter of Howard Burk; Harlan married Lorraine Conrad, daughter of Mrs. Minnie Conrad. They live in Gowanda."

CORRECTIONS TO ABOVE PARAGRAPH, as follows, per Tom G. Hibbard, July 1995: 1) Thomas Hibbard's name is actually TOM. 2) Harlan- name is Harland. 3) Omitted Hoyt, Jr's. Marriage - Hoyt, Jr. married Florence Burns.

Hibbard's (Enos & H. Josephine) impressive cemetery monument in N. Collins Cemetery looks like a cube set on end on top of another base. It is solid granite; an iron bar goes down through the base for support. Explained to Mary (Hibbard) Stack in July 1996 by Grace Korthols, N.Collins Historian.
