He died on July 18, 1800 in Royalton (Windsor) Vermont. He was a Baptist Minister and a Missionary to the feeble churches in the vicinity of Royalton. A company of refugees, mostly from Connecticut, had long been settled at a place called Caldwell's Manor, near the upper part of Vermont and were Americans who espoused the British side during the war of the Revolution, and who fled for safety to the territory of the mother country, some to Nova Scotia and some to Canada. This settlement was first visited by Elder John Hibbard and a signal blessing attended his labors. In a book entitled "The Life And Times Of Rev. Asahel Kendrick", there are several references to Rev. John Hibbard, among the following: "My first tour", says Mr. Kendrick, "in the northern part of Vermont and Canada was in company with Rev. John Hibbard, and I cannot say how many were heard to thank God for the precious and durable fruits of his former friendly tour among them. One would say that he was blessed by his preaching, another that his son or daughter was awakened and blessed. On a certain day we called at the house of a man in Canada, who very soon came in much affected and full of joy; with tearful eyes he said he had been praying the Lord to send some missionaries among them, and just as he ended his prayer his daughter saluted him with the pleasing information of our arrival, which he regarded as a gracious answer to prayer. Mr. Hibbard was led to take these tours by the pressure of his own sympathies for those scattered here and there in the wilderness, destitute of the preaching of the soul-saving Gospel. He was unaided and not retarded by any society, but that gracious Saviour Whom He delighted to recommend to his dying fellowmen knew with what holy zeal he presented a crucified, risen, and exalted Redeemer. At that day the country was new, the traveling bad indeed, and money exceedingly scarce. When we arrived home after a six week tour we had jointly, five or six dollars. In the midst of a career of usefulness he was suddenly cut off, dying after an hour's illness". He and Abigail Cleveland moved to Royalton, Windsor County, Vermont from Connecticut.
